Music from Star Trek DS9’s Vic Fontaine

Vic Fontaine is a hologram character, created as part of a program simulating 1962 Las Vegas on Earth. Vic’s program was a lounge singer modeled after popular mid-20th century entertainers such as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.

Doctor Julian Bashir had the program installed in one of the station’s holosuites at Quark’s.

Vic had a variety of cabaret songs that he would performed with his band. Vic was designed to be self-aware and fully interactive with the program’s participants and in fact was fully aware of his status as a hologram as seen in the opening episode of ‘His Way’ of DS9.

Like The Doctor from Star Trek: Voyager, Vic Fontaine was able to turn himself on and off whenever he desired. Furthermore, he was programmed to be highly perceptive and intuitive, creating a warm, welcoming, down-to-earth character that everyone found very approachable and endearing. In that capacity he proved to be a valuable mentor to many residents of DS9. Nog was helped by Vic in the episode ‘It’s Only a Paper Moon’.

In the episode ‘Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang’ holographic mobsters assume control of Vic Fontaine’s lounge and the crew of DS9 plot to run Vic’s rival out of business and restore the program to normal.

In the final episode of DS9 ‘What You Leave Behind’ Vic puts on a farewell party for the command crew of DS9 after the end of the Dominion War. This would be the last time they were all gathered together before many took new assignments and left the Station.
